Okay, I just really have to get this off my chest.
First, I'll go on the record and admit that yes, I am a fan of the Twilight book series. No, I am not twelve years old, I sure as hell am not overweight, and I'm not even obssessed with the series, but I enjoy reading the books. Yeah, the plot isn't really anything original, the characters do have their moments of coming across as really flat, and there are some things that make me roll my eyes so hard that they probably would've fallen out of my skull. But regardless of those flaws, I still like the books. Sure, they're not going to win some kind of prestigeous award, but they're entertaining, and meant to be such.
So yeah, the crazy fangirls really are scary at times, but what REALLY grinds my gears are the people who constantly seem to feel this need to degrade every single fan and treat them like brain-dead mentally retarded illiterates just for liking the series, regardless of whether they simply enjoy the books as a guilty pleasure or not. For crying out loud, it's gotten to the point where it feels like I'm one of the very few people who's NOT convinced these books are responsible for the total collapse of human civilization, world hunger or our current economic crisis.
And even if I didn't like Twilight, I would still find this irrational hatred towards the fans really annoying, and scary. I hear way more about Twilight from detractors than from fans; I even got introduced to this series by someone who said it was the worst piece of crap she ever read and I only read it simply to see if the books really were that horrible, only to be pleasantly entertained. Yes, it's not the best piece of fiction, but there actually are worse books out there. What's wrong with just forgetting about it instead of bringing it up over and over again? Discussing why you believe Twilight is bad is one thing; dragging it into conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with the books is just annoying and makes you look really bitter and quite frankly, just as stupid as the fans you accuse of being so.
You don't have to like the books and you are perfectly free to express your opinion on why you don't like them, but acting like you're superior and better than everyone else because you don't like/don't read the Twilight books does not make you look smart, edgy or witty - it makes you look really frighteningly obsessed with something completely beyond your control. It's not like Stephenie Meyer drinks the blood of children or is conspiring with terrorists; I really doubt she had any idea that the books would become such a smash.
This is not so much a defense of Twilight, but rather a little suggestion to you Twilight detractors - move on with your life. If you hate it so goddamned much, don't pay it any mind. Save the psychotic hatred for people who REALLY deserve it, KTHXBAI.

A vast majority of the Twilight haters are people that haven't read the story. More than likely they heard about it from a fan and assumed it was stupid because it was a romance between a vampire and human.
What's more, is that almost every single Twilight hater that eventually reads the book decides they love it too. ^_^';;
Though I can sympathize with the Twilight haters a little bit. I've read the series and adored it.. It is in my top 3 favorite series. However, I don't know if you're on Facebook, but the amount of applications and flair and whatnat that obsess over Twlight makes me wonder vaguely if Facebook is run by 14 year old girls. It's getting a tad ridiculous.
Granted, this does not justify a Twlight-fan genocide, yet still..
A balance needs to be struck.
I enjoyed your rant. <3
